Fashion School Background of Famous Designers

Many of the world famous fashion designers had very unique and interesting ways of learning their trades. Of course, most of them studied under other very influential designers, or they owned their own shops.

Yet, others actually took formal training. What you see below is examples of three world famous names that you most likely have heard of before. You can get some insight as to how they learned their trade and how they acquired their talent.

Coco Chanel-Aside from the Catholic Monastery in Aubazine she had not much formal fashion design training. She actually started designing clothes as a hobby, and she started off with making hats.

She received a license as what was called a modiste, which is simply a permit to become a women’s fashion dealer. She opened up a small boutique. She seemed to be one of those that was self-taught and also surrounded her self by many influential people over the years. That is what made her famous along with her talent.

Giorgio Armani-He was attending a formal university as a medical student for awhile. However, while he was there he worked as a buyer for a department store. This is most likely what influenced him to enter the world of fashion.

He worked at this department store from 1957 to 1964 and then from 1974 he started to create his own line of men and women’s clothing. Later (1980) is when he founded the Giorgio Armani USA as well as corresponding companies.

In 1989 he opened shops in London. He is another self-starter much in the same way as Gabrielle “Coco” Chanel was.

Christian Dior-This man is another one of the most influential fashion icons ever. He is most remembered for his time spent studying under Lucien Lelong. He is also known as one who studying along with Yves Saint Laurent.

Yves Saint Laurent-Part of his formal schooling was comlete4d at the Chambre Syndicale de la Couture. However, he became disgruntled and left the school, and within that year he entered the International Wool Secretariat competition and won. It was noticed that Saint Laurent drew in a similar style as Christian Dior so he was sent to Dior and was immediately hired.
